Home inspection is key to successful buying experience

The inspection is a key part of the home-buying process and one that can be intimidating, especially for first-time buyers.

By avoiding these common mistakes, buyers can help ensure that their home inspection proceeds smoothly.

  1. Cutting costs – Choosing an inspector based on the lowest fees could cost more in the long run. Ask your agent for recommendations.

  2. Not being present – Seeing for yourself is better than only reading a report. If you can’t be there in person, you might ask a trusted friend or relative to accompany your agent.

  3. Expecting perfection – Try not to overreact if the home has issues. Remain calm and deal with each repair accordingly.

  4. Not inspecting repairs – Once negotiated repairs have been completed, be sure to check the quality of the work.

  5. Forgoing the inspection – Even homes built within the past three years may have some problems that developed after the final walk-through.
