How To Protect Your Roof
It can be easy to forget about maintaining parts of your house that last a long time. But if you ignore your roof, it can result in damaging and expensive problems down the road. With a few simple steps, you can maintain your roof and prevent the need for costly repairs or replacement.
Clean the gutters.
Gutters clogged with leaves, sticks or other debris prevent water from draining off the roof properly. Accumulated water can easily seep under the roofing structure and cause significant damage.
Keep an eye on shingles and sealant.
Check regularly for damaged or missing shingles. While they are a normal part of roof wear, worn or damaged ones left alone can lead to much bigger problems later. New shingles are cheap and simple to replace. Likewise, look for signs of cracking or wear and tear anywhere sealant is used. Any damaged sealant should be completely removed and new sealant applied.
Keep overhanging branches trimmed.
Leaves from tree branches close to or overhanging your house can collect on the roof, where they may retain moisture and start to rot. This could damage shingles and possibly other elements of the roofing structure if left unattended.
Maintain your chimney.
Check your chimney for cracked or missing mortar and repair it as soon as possible. Mortar holds the chimney bricks in place, and falling bricks could damage the roof.
