Tips for Adding Texture to Any Décor

Whether a room is designated modern, classic, rustic, or something entirely different, texture plays an important role in interior design and décor. The right textures can make a room feel warmer, sleeker or simply more interesting. No matter what your style, consider these elements for incorporating texture into your home.

Wood: Cover a wall in reclaimed wood, bring in distressed furniture or consider a table with unfinished edges. Smooth, finished wood can add texture in a room as well. Polished wood floors and even wood ceilings are timeless design elements.

Cork: Functional and fashionable, cork is having a moment. This texture makes a great accent wall that can be tacked with art, photos and memos. Choose bar stools or side tables with cork elements or accents.

Greenery: Hang plants in baskets. Put fresh-cut flowers in vases for a kitchen table centerpiece. Grow an indoor herb garden to bring green into the kitchen. Even peacock feathers add a great pop of color and fit in with the jewel-tone trend that is in full swing.

Artwork: Art does not have to be 2-D. It can hang from the ceiling or be showcased in recessed wall niches. Pieces crafted out of metal, ceramic, wood, or textiles can all bring much needed texture to any type of room.

Metals: Metals are often overlooked when it comes to texture. Choose one main metal in a room, then add accents in other metal colors and finishes. Mixing metals is acceptable and encouraged!

Accessories: Rugs, baskets, lamp shades, and throw pillows all bring texture into a space. So does a faux fur rug on a hardwood floor. Look for chunky woven blankets or tufted pillows for the couch. Even books on a shelf add texture and warmth in a room.
